FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

What does a call involve?

It’s a brief, no-pressure parent-friendly Zoom call where we stop guessing and identify what’s most likely driving your child’s reading struggles. We’ll see if this is a good fit.

Do you only accept older students?

My students are of all ages but I do specialize in older struggling readers and dyslexic students. Older students are specialists in avoiding difficult tasks so I start by acknowledging that reading is hard! My approach can be described as no-nonsense sprinkled with honesty. All lessons are designed for the individual student and focus on realistic routines, age-appropriate materials, and strategies that work with heavier workloads and content classes.

Will you diagnose my child on the call?

Absolutely Not! A dyslexia diagnosis requires a formal evaluation. What I will do is share an action plan so you leave the call with clarity on likely root causes, what to ask for at school, and whether an outside evaluation is worth pursuing.

What if my child already has an IEP or 504?

Great. We’ll discuss whether the supports are actually helping.  My guess is they are not, or you wouldn’t have scheduled a call.

Do you work with students who think tutoring is a dumb idea?

Avoidance is often self-protection not laziness. Most of my older students have been disappointed in the past and are hesitant to be hopeful. I am brutally honest that if they put in the work, I promise to improve their reading. There is no reason to sugar-coat the situation and older students generally appreciate the honesty.  Lessons are constantly modified to avoid having a student shut down and give up.
