What this reading and spelling assessment actually tells you
Most parents arrive here with a stack of report cards and a feeling that something isn’t right. You were told that your child is fine but you see that they are struggling. This assessment answers that nagging question. In ninety minutes I look at how your child decodes words, how they spell, how fluently they read, and where the underlying system fell apart. Then I write it down for you.
What happens in the session
We meet live online in a Zoom session. Your child works through a series of short tasks: reading real words, nonsense words, spelling to dictation, reading a passage aloud. Nothing is graded and nothing is timed in a way that feels like a test. Most kids relax within a few minutes.
Who this is for?
Students ages 8 to 18 who are guessing at words, avoiding reading, and spelling far below their verbal ability. Older students are exactly who I work with because it’s never too late.
What you receive
I’ll review any evaluations, IEPs, or school records you’d like to provide. Within five business days, you’ll receive a written learning plan detailing specific gaps. This plan is written in plain English, explaining what’s causing the gaps and providing a sequence of instruction that address the gaps. think of the plan as a map to address your child’s needs.
You can hand it to another tutor, use it yourself, or start instruction with me.
FAQs
- Is this the same as a dyslexia diagnosis? No. A formal diagnosis comes from a psychologist or neuropsychologist. This is an instructional assessment. It tells you what to teach and in what order.
- Does my child need to prepare? Not at all. In fact, I need to evaluate where your child’s gaps are occurring.
- Can I use the plan with a different tutor? Absolutely. The plan is yours and will guide anyone trained in structured literacy on how best to help your child fill in existing gaps.
