Description

When you need an IEP / 504 plan review

Maybe the school said your child doesn’t qualify? Maybe you have a plan on paper that nobody is following? Maybe you have a meeting next week and you don’t know what to ask for? I’ve been on your side of that table. I fought my own daughter’s school for a 504 plan and won. Then, I spent years helping other families do the same.

When the IEP isn’t working

Does your child’s IEP have vague goals?  Does it say something like: “will improve reading” and nobody can tell you whether it’s happening. Has the progress report said “progressing” two years in a row? Or maybe the annual review is coming, and you’d like to walk in with something better than what the school is writing.

A vague goal is like a GPS telling you to go somewhere. Everyone nods, and nobody arrives. A strong goal names the skill, where your child is starting, where they will be by the end of the year, and how everyone will know they got there. It’s measurable. That’s the difference that moves your child forward.

How this works

  1. Send me the documents. After checkout, upload the current IEP or 504 plan, the most recent evaluation, the latest progress reports, and a recent work sample if you have one.
  2. I review everything. I look for the gaps.
  3. You get written recommendations. Within five business days, you’ll receive:
    • For an IEP: at least four rewritten or new measurable annual goals in reading, spelling, writing, or comprehension, each with a starting point, a target, and how progress will be measured
    • For a 504 plan: a review of the current accommodations, plus specific wording for any that are missing or too vague to put into practice
    • A short list of questions to ask at your meeting
  4. We meet on Zoom. We walk through the recommendations together, so you can explain them with confidence and know which ones matter most.

What this is and isn’t

The 504 plan consultation is an educational discussion to review existing plans, explain how IEP, and 504 plans work and what makes them succeed. It isn’t legal advice, and it doesn’t include attending a meeting with you.

FAQs

How far ahead of my meeting should I book? At least two weeks. That gives you time to share the proposed goals with the team before the meeting, so nobody is seeing them for the first time across the table.

Can you tell me if the school is breaking the law? I can tell you what the process normally looks like. For a legal opinion, you’ll need to consult an attorney.

My child doesn’t have a plan yet. Is this right for me? Not yet. If your teen was recently evaluated, start with Teen Dyslexia Decoded. Otherwise, reach out and I’ll help you find the right first step.

How do I schedule the call? Once your purchase is complete, you’ll receive an email with a link to schedule your appointment.
